We Were Here is a free indie co-op puzzle solving video game available on Steam, produced by Total Mayhem Games. The game was created by a multidisciplinary team of 15 students from the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.
Story[edit]
Two characters, one an 'adventurer' and the other a 'librarian', are separated and lost in a castle in the midst of a frozen wilderness. Communicating by walkie talkie, the librarian, who has access to information, tries to help the adventurer solve puzzles and escape from the castle.
Awards[edit]
The game won the Indigo award for best game of the year in 2017, and was nominated for the Gamekings Award for 2017 and the Independent Games Festival Best Student Game award for 2018.
History of Total Mayhem Games and We Were Here[edit]
Total Mayhem Games was formed during a College Minor Game Design & Development located in the Netherlands at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The teams could be formed by the students themselves, which lead to the formation of a multidisciplinary team of 15 students. Originally the team called themselves Total Mayham Games, where the 'e' in Mayhem was replaced by 'a' to make a silly wordplay, but this was later changed during the formation of the company Total Mayhem Games.
The students only had 14 weeks to create a game. It could be any game they wanted to make. The teachers advised against any games containing zombies and open world mechanics. This advice was due to the short time the students had to make a game. While in concept phase, the team was inspired by games such as Myst, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and real-life escape rooms. This eventually led to the concept of We Were Here.
We Were Here first appeared on Steam Greenlight, following a green light by the community and steam in just one week. It also had an open alpha test on gamejolt.
On the 2nd of February 2017, Total Mayham Games launched We Were Here for free on steam. The game quickly became popular and was picked up by famous youtubers like ZerkaaPlays and MM7Games.
After a successful launch, the team wanted to continue making games. Not all of the students of the team wanted to stay, usually due to their finishing their education. Eventually, only the core developers of We Were Here (Victor van den Beld, Benjamin van Hemert, Lucia de Visser, Thomas van Opstal, Sam Meyer and Christian de Kool) remained and formed the company Total Mayhem Games. While forming, the investor Art Zuyderwijk invested in Total Mayhem Games. The original music artist of We Were Here, Leon van der Stel also stayed in partnership with Total Mayhem Games.
The team then started working on the next installment in the We Were Here franchise, We Were Here Too
Reception[edit]
We Were Here has earned a gamerscore of 7.44[1] on whatoplay based on 220 user reviews for its Xbox One release and a 9.19[2] based on 10.9K user reviews for its PC release.
Sequel[edit]
A sequel, We Were Here Too, was released on 2 February 2018, exactly one year later from the release of the first game.

For four years, we gossiped and flirted, partied and road-tripped. We were inseparable. Each of us has our own story of falling in or out of love. Of finding out who we are.
Of growing up.We thought we knew everything. We knew nothing. We Were Here is where the Modern Love Stories begins, in a standalone that perfectly captures the humor, angst, and sheer chaos of college. 5 I Love The 90's STARS.(ARC kindly provided by author in exchange for an honest review)In order to properly review this book I need to provide you with a little bit of the back story, so bear with me.
A few years ago I was hunting for something new to read. I came across a book with a very cute cover and a very weird title. The book was Geoducks Are For Lovers by Daisy Prescott. The book was Geoducks Are For Lovers by Daisy Prescott. When I googled Geoducks, the pervert in me thought Jackpot! Just kidding. So I decided to read it, and after only the first chapter I was hooked.
Even though the story had a main character, Maggie, and the book is told from her POV, the real star of the novel was the amazing and long lasting friendship between all the characters. It's been many years since I read Geoducks, but that book has always stayed close to my heart. We Were Here is the story about the same seven friends, but it goes back into their college years. The story is set in the 90's and since I grew up in that era and I loved the first book, I was immediately bursting with glee and desperation to read WWH. This beautiful novel is the soundtrack of the college years of seven friends, who discovered love, hangovers, heartbreaks, failures, and dreams, together. Xevious fc.
Seven strangers who became family after four years of college. The beauty of this story is how familiar it feels. Do you remember those beautifully, messy years of college?
Parties, study groups, cigarettes or maybe pot? Feeling young and reckless, and as if the world was at your feet?
Well, that's what this book is about. Those feelings and experiences. The humor of Daisy Prescott translated beautifully into the story, making it highly entertaining and so funny. Belly aching funny!Daisy Prescott's books feel familiar to me. Like wearing my favorite blanket on a rainy day, or eating my favorite meal. These characters along with her storytelling have grown very dear to my heart, always igniting happy feelings inside me.Reading We Were Here has made me even more nostalgic about these characters, so I've decided to re-read Geoducks are for Lovers.
If you haven't discovered that book yet, drop what you are doing and go get it today, I promise you that you will LOVE IT!I grew up in the late 90's so this is my We Were Here music playlist:.Save Tonight by Eagle-Eye Cherry.Hand In My Pocket by Alanis Morissette.Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.Loser by Beck. Accidentally In Love by Counting Crows. Dreams by The Cranberries. We Were Here is my first book by Daisy Prescott, and I picked a great one to start with.
I loved it so much! The writing is crisp, the dialogue is witty and snappy, and I was drawn into the story from the very first page.Set in the 1990s, We Were Here follows the lives of several students who become friends. Its almost like having seven novellas in one book, with each one telling the story of a character and flowing from one year to the next.

I loved each and every character and was left wanting more of their stories as each section ended.I love how each chapter has a 90’s song title and the story contained in that chapter reflects the title or sentiment of that song. It is genius, really.
Like art imitating life, I was in college during these same years, so for me it was like hearing the soundtrack to my memories of that time. Even if you weren’t alive during the time this book takes place, though, the story is universal and I think everyone will be able to relate to the characters.I thoroughly enjoyed We Were Here and I can’t wait to read along with the rest of the books in the Modern Love Story series. Do yourself a favor and read this book. I think you will be hooked!▸ ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review.▸ Order: ▸ For more reviews, visit.
